The Doorbell Rang

The doorbell rang and then, of course, the dog bell rang, which at our house means a little bit of barking, a storm of tail wagging, and quite a bit of excited jostling towards the front door. We weren't expecting company and for a moment thought that our new next door neighbors needed to borrow an egg or an allen wrench or something else that they hadn't unpacked yet.

I looked out the window and saw a woman I recognized (but couldn't recall the context), a very tall and sturdy man, who was definitely not my new next door neighbor, and a pair of handsome children, who I knew NOT AT ALL. I opened the door, and the woman turned out to be Lynn Davis who I knew through my Board position at Hospice Brazos Valley. She asked nicely if they could come in--Nathan had something for me.

Nathan delivered a large and overflowing bag of beads that his birthday guests at his 7th birthday party had collected to donate to Erin's Dream lanyards. I hear he is looking forward to the next lanyard workshop so he can add his labor and his creative touch to the already huge and selfless gift he has given.

Nathan, thank you for your vision, thank your guests for their generosity, and thank your parents for setting you down a path that will truly make a difference.

Nathan's face captures the joy I feel every time I think of Erin's Dream Lanyards and all of the wonderful people who make what we do possible.

Invited Back to Seguin

The Matadors of Seguin High HOSA club welcomed us back again this year.

So, the day after my first Bush Library workshop, I drove three hours to a school in Seguin where some young high school kids stayed after school on a Friday afternoon to make wands. It got to be 5:30 and I was facing a long, dark ride home, and they just wouldn't let me leave. "Oh, I have an idea for another one!", "Just eight more and we'll have a hundred!", "Can't you just tell your husband you'll come home tomorrow?", ""Tell me more about Erin and Will!"

These compassionate young people have a heart for helping and an eye for art! I am glad that they are all on track (with a few more years of education under their belts) to be health care professionals.

Friends of President Bush Are Friends of Ours!

On Thursday, January 26 and again on Friday, February 3, the volunteers at the Bush Library have Make-and-Take Lanyard workshops. This allows those fantastic volunteers to really spiffy up their look as they conduct tours and do other volunteer services at the Presidential Library. Thanks you Bev Spencer for suggesting the idea and especially to Sharon Merrill, Library staff, and the many volunteers who participated.

Lanyard Friends can you guess what a stir I caused having to take every thing through security? After the first couple of trips through, they got used to me (I think they are even going to lower the bollards for me next week, so I can drive right up to the entrance to unload).

Thanks to the teens and their teachers at Hammond-Oliver High School for making 200 of these last week. They have huge heart as well as great talent. These Erin's Dream Wand will adorn the tables in centerpieces this Saturday in Washington DC at the dinner after the lighting of the Childhood Cancer Christmas Tree sponsored by ACCO. It has been a blessing to work with Ruth Hoffman and Amber Masso at ACCO to make this happen. Partnerships like this are worth their weight in gold.

Beads, Beads, and More Beads

Long-time friend and supporter of Erin's Dream Lanyards, Jennifer Fountain, is taking advantage of some new opportunities, but it means she has to close her store to pursue them.

Beach Time--Art and Soul!

You may not realize it, but one of the best times of year to head to the beaches in Galveston is November. The crowds are gone. The traffic is placid. The surf is endless and beautiful, and you don't have to share it with everyone and her sister.

This year, I'm breaking away from November grading for a few days to take in the Texas Art Education Association's annual conference. Erin's Dream Lanyards was chosen as this year's Art and Soul philanthropic project ,and I'm totally excited to take all of our lanyards and other beaded items to share with some of the most wonderful, talented, and energetic people in the state. That it happens to be at Moody Gardens in Galveston is just icing on the cake. That we are helping them celebrate their 50 Year Anniversary is like adding a double scoop of ice cream along side.

Simple Dream Lanyards--Canyon Creek

I usually pitch lanyard workshops to middle school and high school kids. That was the original working group and it just seems natural. Last year I started to get more requests to figure out a way for younger children to get involved.

We all know that stringing beads is not rocket science, but artfully stringing beads does take a little forethought and design sense, certainly possible, but not a foregone conclusion in everyone under ten.

After thinking about it a while, I came up with the idea for a Simple Dream Lanyard that even the very young and and inexperienced could make. We tried it out at the Flaming Arrow YMCA Camp this summer with amazing results, and because we mostly use seed beads, we can price them at a $10 minimum donation.

When I was invited to Canyon Creek Presbyterian in Plano to do a program with their CIA (Children in Action), I loaded up the supplies and headed north. These lovelies really got after it, and I felt like I had made a roomful of new friends. The adults of the church did their part on Sunday morning by practically clearing me out of all the lanyards the children made, plus the ones I brought

Erin's Dream Necklace!

This beautiful face belongs to my new friend and also one of my most recent partners at Erin's Dream Lanyards. Okay, so she didn't make an EDL. She made an EDN. N = necklace. She and my digital friend Brooke (rivervision.com) collaborated to make this lovely necklace for her eight-year-old cousin's baptism gift.

Did you know that collaborate is one of my favorite verbs?

She designed the pattern and strung the beads while Brooke did the dull work of holding the wire and the skilled work of crimping. Oh, and here's something REALLY sweet about the necklace. At the bottom - you'll see she's got a big square bead, then a diamondy like bead - on both sides, a pink one (on both sides), then - a green one - on both sides. She wanted the green beads there so that they would be seen, because of Erin. This little girl doesn't fully get Erin's story, but she knows that Erin did something really wonderful for kids with cancer, and so she wants Erin to be easily seen in the necklace by anyone who sees her cousin wearing it.

African Line

We have a limited line made with beads from Africa. I bought some of these beads when we went to South Africa last summer for the soccer World Cup. Imagine my surprise and delight when I noticed that our hotel was right across the street from a small bead shop (in fact, it was the only bead shop I saw the entire time we were in South Africa!).

We also use beads from the Beads for Life project. "Beads for Life is a no-profit organization providing impoverished Ugandan women the chance to lift their families out of poverty by making beaded jewelry out of recycled paper. Many of the beaders are HIV+ mothers or war refugees. . . Bead for Life pays the beaders fair trade prices for their work. . . All net proceeds from Bead for Life product are re-invested in programs that fight extreme poverty.

Not only that but they are beautiful, as demonstrated by these African line lanyards (If you request, we can also use these beads to make necklaces, bracelets, keychains, or eyeglasses chains). We hope you will donate at least $25 for these lanyards that help in so many ways!

Sprucing Up the Place

Erin Dream Lanyards hasn't had a very public face for a few weeks, but loads has been going on behind the scenes. We are using the winter to build our inventory for several public showings starting next month (check the calendar in the side bar for details).

We have also started working on making Erin Dream Lanyards a little more user friendly. You will notice that we have posted several entries in a row, describing various sub-categories of lanyards (you can "share" these on Facebook if you want!) and at the top of the page is a button to Browse all the lanyard lines. This is a work in progress! Please check back regularly. There are at least a dozen lines waiting for me to take photos of and write descriptions for. All of this will make it easier to understand what we do around here and to make ordering more than just guess work. Now the hard part will be making a decision!

Odd Friday in Seguin!

I am thrilled to get the invitation to share the lanyard project with the Health Science students in Seguin. I'll tell you all about it when I return.

EDL Visits Washington D.C.

Jana McBroom has participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day in Washington, DC for several years. This year she sported an Erin's Dream Lanyard and has kindly agreed to be a guest blogger. Thank you Jana for all the hard work you do!!

I recently returned from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day in Washington, DC (www.the3day.org). At this event, the participants walk 60 miles over the course of 3 days to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The “3-Day” is held in 14 cities across the United States.
This was my third year participating in this event. The first two years I participated as a walker. This year I decided to see the event “from the other side” and participated as a crew member. I also thought it would be fun and interesting to go to one of the other cities, so I chose Washington, DC. The DC event had approximately 2,000 walkers and 350 crew members.
As a crew member, I was placed on a “pit stop” crew. The route is well marked for the walkers with stops every 2-3 miles. Pit Stops have water, Gatorade, snacks, medical (to treat blisters or any other issues) and the beloved Porta Potties. There are also stops called “Grab and Go’s” which have only water/Gatorade and the Porta Potties.
I arrived in DC on Thursday, October 7 at about 12:30. I was picked up by a friend who had arrived earlier. We headed to our hotel to drop off our bags and then went to a Crew Meeting that lasted the rest of the afternoon. We headed back to our hotel and had dinner and then it was early to bed in preparation of a 3:30 a.m. wake up call.
On Friday, October 8, the bus picked us up at our hotel and we headed to Opening Ceremonies at the stadium of the professional baseball team the Washington Nationals. My friend was on a medical team so we separated early. My crew left the stadium at about 5:00 a.m and headed to our first stop which was a park in downtown DC. We set up our tables and refreshments and waited for the walkers to arrive.
The walkers are totally amazing. All shapes, sizes, ages, genders. They come in costumes. They wear signs stating who they are walking in memory or in honor of. There are breast cancer survivors. There are people that are currently undergoing cancer. There was a man with one leg. There was a man dressed like Santa Claus. They are all there for a reason and it is most interesting to visit with the walkers and find out what brought them to the 3-Day.
After our pit stop closed, we had lunch and headed to a later pit stop to help them. Then we headed to camp. Traffic was not kind in DC, and camp was held a ways out of town in Germantown. We did not arrive at camp until close to 7 p.m.
Camp is an experience not to be missed. A sea of small pink pup tents. A giant dining tent. Showers in 18-wheelers. An area called “Main Street” where you can charge your cell phone, get a back or foot massage, or email home. The dining tent each night has entertainment. This year, there was karaoke on Friday night and a dance party to close the evening. On Saturday evening we had a special surprise with country singer Candy Coburn singing “She’s a Pink Warrior” and then Nancy Brinker, the founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Saturday night also closed with a dance party. Believe it or not, after walking 40 miles, the walkers still have the energy to get up and dance!
Lights out comes at 9:00 each evening. Sleeping in a two-person pink tent is an experience not to be missed! Luckily we were blessed with wonderful weather the entire weekend. The alarm was set for 4:30 a.m. both nights.
Saturday our crew left camp at 5:15 and headed to our location. We set up our stop and waited for the walkers. Once our stop closed, we took a little ice cream break and headed to a grab & go to help them. We got back to camp earlier on Saturday and got to have showers before dinner!
Sunday we left camp again at 5:15 and headed to town to set up our pit stop. After all the walkers came through, we tore down our stop and had lunch. Then we were able to head to the closing ceremony site. Closing in DC was held at the Washington Monument. Such an amazing backdrop for an amazing experience!
The closing ceremony is a very moving event. The speaker talks to the crowd, and then the walkers all march in together – 2,000 strong. They all wear the “victory shirt” that they receive at the end of the walk. The walkers have on white, the cancer survivors, pink, and the crew, grey. They hold up one shoe as a salute to the brave people battling breast cancer.
The event is exhausting and overwhelming, but it is in my blood. I can’t imagine NOT participating in the 3-Day in some way. I don’t really have a close link to breast cancer at this time and I hope I never do. I walked the first year with a friend who is a 10 year survivor and wanted to walk but didn’t have anyone to walk with so I told her I would walk with her. I was hooked.
This year I was very proud to wear one of the Lanyards for Erin. I will proudly wear it at all future 3-day events! Thank you for the honor.

All I Can Say Is Wow!

The more I have a chance teach people the story of Erin and the lanyards, the more I feel it is the right thing to do.

Tim Huchton was the director of Erin's summer camp in 2008. He later put together a great care package of Mo stuff for Erin which she received with delight, even though she never had the opportunity to use much of it. I don't know why he peaked in on Let's Do It! earlier this spring or why he followed the link over to Erin's Dream Lanyards or why he clicked the "Join Our Facebook Group" button, but he did. He ended up in the discussion section, which prompted him to send me a message, asking if Mo Ranch could make Erin's Dream Lanyards at summer camp.

Of course I said Yes!

Then we had to figure out how to get it done. Easy-peasy. I'll just call room service and ask for bead supplies for 350.

Anyway, a few months, a few phone calls, a few emails, and a few hundred miles later, I am at Mo Ranch. The first batch of campers arrive on Sunday. I taught the eighteen camp counselors Erin's story and how to make lanyards. A few of them were at Erin's camp the summer before last, but all of them seemed to appreciate the activity. I hope to have some new facebook friends before the summer is out!

I've said it before, but it bears repeating. I fall in love every time I see a new group of lanyards. These young people filled the Milk Barn (no longer used for its original purpose) with affirmations, encouragement, and some very lovely lanyards this afternoon. I can hardly wait for them to spread the word.

Fine Day at Bryan High

I loved every minute of the day I spent lanyarding with the young folks in Anja Schwalen's classes at Bryan high yesterday, AND I once again came away with a generous appreciation of all those dedicated men and women who spend their days with our youth. Six hours of stringing beads should not have left me as tired as I was, but somehow riding herd on the seventy-five or so different personalities that moved in and out of the classroom, explaining the cause, helping them make bead choices that fit their personalities (and also the personalities of potential lanyard owners), and keeping everything moving forward, left me wishing that I had a in-home chef (and masseuse, while we're dreaming).

Frankly, I'm in awe of anyone who, as their career, chooses to hang with teenagers all day and who, after doing so, agrees to go back and do it again the next day!

Thanks to Anja and her colleagues and all the young Vikings who made the day such a great success!

Lara W. (Han's mom and lanyard originator!) celebrated a big lanyard jackpot this morning. Last fall her pal Marlene dreamed up a partnership between The Woodlands/Conroe area NCL (National Charity League) and the lanyard project. Together they held a series of lanyard workshops and a big Bead-A-Thon over the course of the spring semester. They held the final workshop this week with the Sustainers group, and we were all very pleased to have had so much interest, such good attendances, a huge number of beautiful lanyards, as well as a large quantity of donated beads with these philanthropic mother/daughter classes.

This morning, Lara learned that the news was even better than she thought. The group wants to continue our partnership next year, plus they made an outright donation to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundations of $1000 in honor of the lanyard project. These fabulous women are great to work with and we look forward to next year! The amazing thing is that this partnership has focused primarily on just one chapter of NCL (The Woodlands Chapter) and there are several in the area.

Hello, I am an 8th grade student attending P.S.122, in Queens, New York. I write to you to express the extraordinary reaction Erin's story has played on my school community. A teacher of mine was able to learn about your daughter's incredible story and her fight against neuroblastoma cancer. She also showed us Erin's love for lanyards. The response from students was stunning. They all were captured by her will to do as much as she could, despite being diagnosed with the frightening illness she had. Many of my classmates found the need to do whatever they could to help Erin's cause and to help spread her message. Our grateful teacher showed us the art of lanyards, and it quickly caught on. Nearly everyone had their own lanyard, comprised of eye-opening color combination, in which they were working on intricate designs on. Everyone was captured by your daughter's ability to be fearless against her cancer and determined to increase funding for pediatric cancer research.

I would like to thank you and Erin for inspiring my school and I. We were able to grasp the mentality of your daughter, which motivated all of us to do our best to help.We continue to stitch lanyard to continue Erin's work that was left behind. She left this world too early, but, her heart and her soul continues to move all of us, due to her accomplishments. May you continue your efforts to spread your daughter's dream and message. She has certainly left an impact on us.

Laguna Lanyarders!

My sister-in-law and nieces planned and hosted a lanyard workshop a couple of weeks ago out in southern california. I really wanted to hop a flight to the west coast and join in! Everything they did was top notch: the assembled talent, the bead choices, the display, the food, and of course the beautiful work they did!

Here's what they wrote me about the experience:

Even though this lanyard party happened just after Valentine's, it actually began at Christmas. Shannon Thornburg gave her mom and sister packets of beads as their gifts. She wrapped them in shiny paper and hung them on the tree like icicles!!

Friends and neighbors of the the Thornburg girls gathered on Friday, February 19th to make lanyards. Everyone had a great time, and Shannon's jambalaya was a big hit!!

And, most importantly, lots of beautiful lanyards were made. It is so fun to see how different each creation is and the endless possibilities, each magnificent in it's uniqueness. This is such a wonderful reflection of Erin and her amazing creativity!!

Hopefully this will be just the first of many.

Erin's Dream Lanyard fans,

I have a guest blogger today. Her name is Virginia, and she is one of my dear internet friends. Virginia is a young woman, full of life and wonder. She contacted me by email, even though we had never met, nor had she met Erin. . . even though we had never corresponded. . . even though Italian is her first language, and I know no Italian. Virginia was a young child when she lost her closest playmate and younger cousin to neuroblastoma. Now as a teenager, she reached out to me across the Atlantic to try to give me comfort in the loss of Erin and to try to figure out a way to get involved with Erin's Dream Lanyards.

I am trying to figure out an effective way to help her join the fight against neuroblastoma, even though she can't conveniently get to one of our workshops. My first thought was to have her put into words, her passion for the project. When you read what she writes below, perhaps you will be moved to join us in this fight. There are so many ways you can help!

My work for Erin…

This morning, when I woke up, at first I didn’t realize it was a sunny day, because after many days of raining, I didn’t hope that the sky could shine again…

So I ran out from my home, and I smelt the perfume of the fresh air, I counted all the rays of sunshine who were playing between the trees, and then I raised my head and I saw the sun.. It was simply wonderful… it might sounds common, but it was shining like it never did before, even after so many bad days… I don’t know why, but that thing made me think about Erin, whose amazing life touched my heart and my soul…

Erin, with her simplicity and joy, was like a young sun that, despite all the heavy and dark clouds who could obscure her life, always found the strength to shine, to fly high with her mind and her dreams, to don’t give up, not even when carry on was difficult and painful… She never let her life slide on her, but she brought with her little but strong fingers all her hopes for the future…

She had the skill to bring the light in the life of who loved her and still loves and remember her…

Her incredible pragmatism and cheerfulness was contagious to me, even though I never met her personally, and the smiles she had in all her photos made me smile, too.

This morning, I could hear Erin’s laugh through the wind, her sparkly eyes in the rays of sunshine, her powerful energy in the brightest light I had ever seen…

I can say Erin is still here… she hasn’t gone forever.. I’m sure of this, because I have a little princess in heaven, now, too… and I still talk to my little angel, I keep her beside me every day, I write to her letters full of smiles and tears, I know she is holding my hand right now, she will never leave my side, and I hope I could see her again someday…

So, Erin is with us in every step of our way, beside us when we go through troubles and we haven’t any hope or strength to carry on…

She still live in the remembrance of all us and it’s our duty not let her life slip and flow away from our hearts…

So join Erin’s project, and in every little bead you’ll hold in your hand, in every string you’ll tie, you will feel Erin’s life essence, her bright spirit and her soul talking and inspiring you…

And if you’ll go out, tomorrow, if you pay attention to the sound of the wind, I’m sure you could hear someone laughing beside you…

Why do I bead?

I have never been a particularly crafty person. I don’t quilt, make flower arrangements or scrapbook. Michael’s was a store I drove by on my way to Target. So why do I bead?

Vickie Buenger and I met in Nashville many years ago. We formed an immediate bond since we were both Texas girls (one A&M and one UT). Even when we moved to different cities we continued to visit each other. That is why I was lucky enough to know a red-headed dynamo named Erin.

You know Erin’s story. I watched, hoped and prayed over the years while she fought her disease. I rejoiced and despaired with every up and down.

I joined the beaders after Erin lost her fight with Neuroblastoma. Her picture sits in my office. She has her arm around Scarlet (one of my dogs) and her face beams. That smile rarely left her face. It inspires and motivates me. I want to help fulfill her dream of finding a cure for pediatric cancer – one bead at a time.

How Do I Order a Lanyard?

As obvious as it seems to me about how someone might become the owner of one of Erin's Dream Lanyards, I have had some signs lately that what's obvious to me is not necessarily obvious to everyone else who might be lusting after a lanyard.

First, except for the Christian Year lanyard, each and every lanyard is unique and one of a kind. Someone who really cares designs a lanyard that they think someone might love. Once it's made, the (metaphorical) mold is broken.

That means you can't look through the photos, pick a lanyard that strikes you, and order that specific one. Instead, here are some alternatives:

Make a Custom Order:

1. Use the order form on the right side of the EDL main page.
2. Fill in your Personal Details, so I know who to ship to and so that I can contact you if I have questions.
3. Under "Product," specify whether you are ordering a lanyard, manyard (a lanyard with its own bottle-opener attachment), eyeglass chain, key chain, or necklace.
4. Under "Remarks," you can customize your order. Choose your preferred color combination, whether you would like a longer or shorter length and give instructions on style (for example, “delicate," “bold," “asymmetrical”, “manly”, etc.).

As an alternative to the order form, I can send a photo of available inventory through email (Beware that I am not a very skilled photographer!).

How Much?

All of Erin's Dream Lanyards are available for a tax-deductible donation. I send EVERY DIME I receive to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation to fund a cure for the disease that killed Erin and so many other children. Volunteers donate their time to make all of the lanyards and many also donate beads. Walter and I pay for all the other expenses we incur.

We encourage donations of at least $20 per lanyard, but will accept a minimum of $15.

We guarantee all of Erin's Dream Lanyards and will repair them if they break.

But Wait! There's More!

Besides the usual reminder that we will have an Odd Friday workshop on Black Friday for those of you not interested in shopping or college football, I have another guest blogger. This time Janice explains why she is a repeat beader:

"There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. "

I have always loved the words and haunting tune of this old African-American spiritual, but in the last several months this song came to have a much deeper meaning in my life. Our hearts were broken the day Erin left this world and I felt that I would never be whole again. Making lanyards has been the balm that is helping my shattered heart to heal. To be honest, the first few times that I met with others at the Buenger’s home to make lanyard were very difficult. I was choked up on the drive out, shaky while I was there, and a mess for the next few days afterwards. As the months have passed, it became easier and easier, and I find myself out of sorts if I go more than a couple of weeks without attending a lanyard workshop.

The last verse of this hymn tells us that if we cannot preach like Peter or pray like Paul, we can tell the love of Jesus, that he died for all. I can’t do the research that might someday find a cure for this disease, but I CAN make a lanyard that might one day help save the life of a child.

Second graders don’t really understand boundaries very well- they love to touch and hug and feel and love maybe a little too much for the comfort of most. But it’s part of what I love about my job. And these little sweeties can’t get enough of my lanyard! The symmetry and shine of the beads, the interesting feel of the patterns, the glimmer of something around my neck. Kids can’t resist. My lanyard gets handled a lot over the course of a typical school day.

I picked up my first one at the CNCF conference this past summer, a fellow cancer-mom admiring another’s beautiful work in memory of her beautiful Erin. I eagerly awaited the first day of school, after two years removed from my job to care for Drew during his treatment. Now with Drew, almost four, in remission since April 2008, and his brother Ben, almost two, who was born during the early stages of Drew’s treatment, I was ready to return.

I clipped my ID onto my lanyard during my two teacher prep days before school started, and the compliments flew! Everyone wanted to know where they could get one! There were many interested in my lanyard, but even more importantly than that, I found myself with a natural, beautiful way to talk about neuroblastoma, talk about what my son and my family had been through, and talk about Erin and so many beautiful children like her who have been lost. Even though most of my co-workers were familiar with my journey, this beautiful jewelry became a new reason and a new way for them to understand who I really was, and what was really important to me now that my life had been turned upside-down.

I set up my first display in the teacher’s lounge, and was delighted at the success. Delighted for CNCF, and delighted for the memory of Erin. Then I realized it was going even further than that. There were twenty new lanyards out there, twenty more people passing the word about neuroblastoma, about Erin’s story, about Drew’s story. And I knew I had to continue bringing these lanyards to my community of teachers and beyond.

Vickie has generously and enthusiastically responded to the “demand” of her product here. She’s even added a special “blue” bead to some of the pieces to honor Drew’s battle with neuroblastoma. It’s so touching to know that his story gets out there too. I love knowing that even though that time in our lives was terrible, it is now being used to do good- to spread awareness, to raise money for research, to talk about amazing kids like Drew and Erin.

The lanyards continue to be in high demand here in Crown Point, Indiana. There have even been several special orders. I’ve got a whole office of women waiting for a display this week. And I know there will be a whole new group of people that not only enjoy beautiful jewelry, but now have an easy way to tell the world about neuroblastoma.

As for me, three new lanyards later and all of mine still take a beating from my second graders (did I mention they’re incredibly sturdy?) I’m proud to wear and spread the word about something strong, beautiful, and unique, just like our kids. Thank you Vickie, and Erin, for bringing Erin’s Dream Lanyards to Indiana!

I have loads of good news about lanyards and just haven't paused the fifteen minutes I needed to thank everyone for the wonderful work they are doing. This breaks my number one rule, that you can never say thank you often enough.

Since I last updated, we have had three absolutely terrific workshops. Athena F-B and her mom hosted a terrific gathering in Spring, and friends of Alex showed their inner artists by creating some truly beautiful lanyards. Many of these passed quickly into new homes as Athena's natural charm and enthusiasm created a ready market for lanyards at a conference she had at work! Believe me, last week was a big week for lanyard donations!

I also got to spend a couple of hours with Michelle L.'s junior girl scout troop last week. These young women dived into the project with enthusiasm and big ideas and created some of the boldest and most whimsical lanyards I have seen in quite a while. They sat positively rapt while I explained the background of the lanyards and had a lot of questions about Erin and the project. Many of them came up to tell me how "unfair" or "wrong" it was that Erin died, and I had to agree.

Yesterday, a large group from the Student Attitude Committee of the A&M Consolidated Student Council met after school to string lanyards (Extra thanks to Tracy A. and friends of Colby for doing all the advanced planning). Those young folks sure were balm for my flagging attitude (as I had spent the forty-eight hours since my return from Louisville being slapped around by the realities of semester projects, exams, and the general mayhem of semester week eleven). Not only were these Tigers exceptionally prolific and artistic, but they invited us back next week.

I do want to take a minute to talk about Tracy, who has thrown herself into lanyards almost like it was as much fun as hunting and fishing. She has a bold and practiced eye for color and striking bead combinations, and has passed on those skills to Colby and Riley (age 5 and 6) who have much more patience and stick-to-it-iveness than any boys I have met. Tracy is also total energy. In the last two weeks she has worked, kept up with a family with three boys, hunted opening season, held a garage sale with her mom for CNCF, arranged this workshop, and made contact with and had great success introducing lanyards to the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital. I can barely keep her in lanyards and starts, which, if you think about it is a High Class kind of problem to have.

In other lanyard news, Rachel S. has plans for a workshop in her dorm at Texas State University. I can't imagine that college students have the time to bead this time of the semester, but perhaps procrastination is an art. No doubt, everyone will see building beautiful creations as a stress buster instead of a time waster. I am also working with Kathryn R. to schedule a workshop at the University of Minnesota and with Moureen W. to get a regularly scheduled beading activity started at the YMCA in Pennsylvania.

Kate P. up in Indiana continues to spread the word about lanyards in her neck of the woods. Every time I open an email from her, she is extolling the loveliness of the most recent batch I have sent her and asking if I can send more. I always say YES! Brooke R. in Utah is also spreading the word about the Christian Year Lanyard in her congregation. If you are not too crafty or don't want the hassle of organizing a workshop, consider dropping me a line. I don't mind sending out a set of lanyards for interested folks to show around to their ID badge wearing friends. These lanyards are much more desirable when you see them in person than if you just read about them and then try to explain them to someone.

That brings me to the reminder that this Friday (the dreaded Friday the Thirteenth?) is the first Odd Friday we've had in three weeks. I have missed all my friends terribly, and really hope you can fit me into your schedule after school or after work that day. I have a very large number of special orders that I need experienced beaders to help with. We will also have some newcomers from A&M Consolidated Interact, thanks to Sallyann Z.'s initiative.

“Fighting for Layla a Fall Fundraiser” will be held Saturday, October 24, 11 am to 4 pm, at Warner Elementary School, 19545 Cypress N. Houston, Cypress, Texas. The family fun event will feature a raffle, face painting, barbecue and a silent auction.

The event organizers have invited Erin’s Dream Lanyards to be a part of this special day. Lanyards will be on display and available for purchase with a donation to CNCF (Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation).

Layla Grace Marsh is an almost 2 old girl that was diagnosed with Neuroblasoma in May of this year. She has undergone multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and blood transfusions. Her future treatment will consist of radiation followed by a bone marrow transplant.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the Marsh family to help defray the cost of Layla's care, with a donation given to the CNCF. For more information about Layla visit www.laylagrace.org.

Erin's Dream Lanyards Go to New York

Allie Maier first learned about Neuroblastoma when a young family friend, Toby Pannone, was diagnosed with the disease. Allie followed Toby’s struggle and the many surgeries and treatments he endured. In honor of Toby, she wanted to help raise awareness and funds for Pediatric Cancer as a part of her “Mitzvah” project in celebration of her Bat Mitzvah. A family friend, Mooki Saltzman, told Allie and her mother about Erin’s Dream Lanyards. Allie had found the perfect project.

Since the Maiers live out of state, Allie’s mom Elissa gathered the necessary information from the Erin’s Dream Lanyards web site to organize the event. On October 2, Allie Maier hosted the first lanyard workshop to be held in New York! Allie began the day by sharing Toby’s story. She then told the group about Erin and her dream of raising funds and awareness with the lanyard project. Allie’s friends jumped in with enthusiasm and created the beautiful lanyards pictured below. They enjoyed it so much that they asked to come back and make more. The workshop turned into a weekend event with other friends and family members joining in the fun. To date the group has created 65 lanyards and they are still going!

Origins of Erin's Dream Lanyards

Some friends introduced Erin to the concept of making lanyards with jewelry wire and glass beads last fall when she was having in-patient chemo. Erin thought they would make great Christmas gifts for teachers. Unfortunately, each one took longer than she thought to make, so we had to fall back on a different plan for teacher gifts. Erin finished making the ones she had started over Christmas vacation and decided she would give them to the teachers anyway. She paired that idea with idea that they might want to make a donation to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation in exchange for having a cool and beautiful lanyard. Soon Erin's lanyards became such a big hit that she needed help from friends to collaborate with her.

Erin died in April 2009, a month short of finishing her sixth grade year in the INQUIRE Academy at Jane Long Middle School. Erin's friends have continued her work making lanyards, and people all over have continued to send donations to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation in exchange for these artful and whimsical items.

There's a more important story embedded here. Erin's beaded lanyards help people by providing harnesses for their IDs. They also help people by generating funds for pediatric cancer research. Beyond these instrumental outcomes, there are some other benefits. Beading gave Erin something to do when she didn't feel like doing much. It gave her friends something to do with her when she couldn't run around and play like they could. Beyond that, wearing one of Erin's Dream Lanyards might prompt someone to notice and gives the wearer a chance to spread the word.

Since her death, lanyard making has continued to bring our friends together and has helped us make new friends. We add at least one green bead (Erin's favorite color) to each lanyard as "A Touch of Erin." When we bead, we share time, space, and conversation. As a bonus, Erin's friends have learned that you don't have to be rich, powerful, or even grown up to make a difference. Erin's Dream Lanyards has raised thousands of dollars since her death towards finding a cure for neuroblastoma.
